I feel a bit squeamish giving this book 3 stars, probably because I can now only endure this series in "spork" form, but I may as well be honest. I liked this book! For two reasons, I think: I read it around the same time as my friends and for the first time ever I was able to book-chat (Eragon sucks - Murtagh 4EVA, or something like that), and that social aspect made it a lot more enjoyable. And then we saw the movie (loool).Secondly, Eragon was "fresh". I read it at a time when the only Star Wars movie I'd ever seen was Return of the Jedi, and while I had seen the Lord of the Rings movies, I guess they didn't make a big enough impression for me to realise that Eragon borrowed rather heavily from Tolkien. Ultimately, it was a pretty uninspired mishmash of the two franchises. And I think "uninspired" is the key word here.If you're young and unexposed to dungeons and dragons type fantasy as I was then you'll probably have fun with this book. The plot twists, setting and character archetypes won't seem cliché and you'll probably be able to overlook the awry writing. Maybe.
